Hearing the Scorned Prophet
Jeremiah 20:7 (22nd Ord Time Yr A)

You duped me, O Lord, and I let myself be duped;

you were too strong for me, and you triumphed.

All the day I am an object of laughter;

everyone mocks me.

Jeremiah 20:7

Jeremiah the prophet uses a strong, even shocking, image for how it feels to be God’s prophet, full of divine words his audience doesn’t want to hear.

He says it feels like God got him pregnant with an unwanted child, and now that the pregnancy is showing everybody is mocking him.

Truth time:  who do you scorn and mock?  Maybe you don’t do it out loud, maybe only inside yourself—but who?

Could the one you scorn have a word of God for you, one you don’t want to hear?

Take some time this week to examine your conscience about those you mock, dismiss, judge, or put down.  Try to let them prophesy to you.  Try to hear what God might be telling you through them.  Then decide on some small way you can act on the word of God you’re hearing, and do it.
