Tiny Sounds, Tiny Signs
1 Kgs 19:9, 11-13 (19th Sun Ord TimeA)

At the mountain of God, Horeb, Elijah came to a cave where he took shelter. Then the Lord said to him, “Go outside and stand on the mountain before the Lord; the Lord will be passing by.”

A strong and heavy wind was rending the mountains and crushing rocks before the Lord—but the Lord was not in the wind.

After the wind there was an earthquake—but the Lord was not in the earthquake.

After the earthquake there was a fire—but the Lord was not in the fire.

After the fire there was a tiny whispering sound. When he heard this, Elijah hid his face in his cloak and went and stood at the entrance of the cave.

1 Kings 19:9a, 11-13a

Try to take some time each day this week to sit quietly, let yourself become still, and listen for every sound you can hear.  Try to hear the tiniest, faintest sounds.

Do this for a few minutes each day.  Then, during the rest of the day, as you go about your life, try to notice the little things that give you a smile, a momentary lift, a flash of relief or hope or joy—anything that makes you want to say, “Yes, there is life here, even in the midst of all this stuff.”

That’s all—just spend a few minutes each day listening for tiny sounds, and the rest of the day looking for tiny signs that God is with you where you are.
