Gen 9:14-15 (1st Sun Lent Yr B)

When I bring clouds over the earth, and the bow appears in the clouds, I will recall the covenant I have made between me and you and all living beings…

Genesis 9:14-15

The story of Noah and the ark speaks to us of the essential unity of all creation.  In the story, human sin threatens all life, not just human life or the lives of sinners.  And at the culmination of the story, God makes a covenant with all living beings—humans included in the vast web of life.

This week, try to practice prayerful awareness of your connectedness to all people and all living things.

Notice the people in your life, both those you know and those you have only glancing contact with, and try to hold them—however briefly—in the light of God’s love.

Notice the animal life around you—pets, wildlife, bugs, whatever.  Allow them to speak to you of the God who made them.

Notice plant life around you—depending on where you are, some may be dormant, some just starting to bud, some in full growth.  Try to notice plants you’ve never paid attention to before, and try to find something to appreciate in every plant you notice.

Also this week, try to find some time to reflect on how you relate to the people, the animals, and the plants in your life.

Do your actions reflect respect for the bond that unites you with all other living beings and with God? What could you do, or do differently, to better express that bond?

Ask God to open your eyes and heart this week to your essential connection with all life.
